Forecasting the Potential of the Art Market – Art Daegu 2007 Concludes Successfully
Art Daegu 2007, the final art fair held in Korea this year, successfully wrapped up its five-day event from December 12 to 16. Co-hosted by LEEART, Monthly Art magazine, and EXCO, the fair featured 50 galleries, including major domestic names like Gana Art Gallery and Lee Hwa Ik Gallery, along with emerging local galleries and international participants from France, Austria, Japan, and Taiwan. The event attracted over 13,000 visitors during the exhibition period and achieved impressive sales, surpassing 3.2 billion KRW. The fair's success was attributed to the careful curation of galleries and artists by the organizers, ensuring a diverse range of artworks with minimal overlap in terms of artists and works.
Collector Lee Seung-Hyun, who came from Seoul and purchased a piece, commented, "The event was more well-organized than I expected. Both the quality of the artworks and the overall management left a clean and professional impression." A representative from a local gallery who participated in the fair said, "Rather than showcasing overexposed and well-known artists, galleries took a chance by presenting new works and artists they've carefully prepared through past exhibitions, and that seems to have paid off. I plan to participate again next year."
However, some concerns were raised, including the relatively low turnout of general visitors outside of gallery and art professionals and the lack of side events to attract broader public interest. Nevertheless, considering that it was the first event led by private organizations without substantial funding, it was seen as a positive test of the potential for a successful regional art fair.
A local artist who attended the fair said, "Compared to the bubble-prone auction-based art market, having a well-organized art fair like this seems to be a better direction for the art world’s growth. I hope to see more ongoing efforts to recognize artists' genuine work and support from galleries."
Art Daegu Organizing Committee Chair, Heesoo Lee, CEO of LEEART, remarked, "It feels rewarding to see the results of our hard work. The participation of major galleries with high-quality works gave us great strength. We aim to establish Art Daegu as a leading art fair representing Korea." This year's fair will be held earlier than last year, from June 25 to 29 at EXCO.
