The Successful Debut of the New Art Fair, Art Daegu 2007

Amid a mixture of anticipation and concern, Art Daegu 2007 concluded successfully. According to the Art Daegu 2007 Secretariat, the event, held from December 12 to 16 at the Daegu EXCO, attracted over 13,000 visitors and achieved total sales exceeding 3.2 billion KRW. This is seen as a highly encouraging result, far surpassing initial expectations. When compared to the sales figures of other art fairs held in Korea in 2007, such as KIAF (Korea International Art Fair) in May with 17.5 billion KRW, the Contemporary Art Festival in March with over 1 billion KRW, the Manif Art Fair in April with over 1 billion KRW, and others such as the Art Star 100 Art Fair, the Korea Galleries Art Fair, and the Seoul Open Art Fair, Art Daegu 2007 certainly holds its ground in terms of transaction volume.

However, beyond the numerical success, Art Daegu 2007 is noteworthy for two additional reasons. First, as the last art fair held in Korea in 2007, it served as a valuable indicator for the future of the art market. Second, it garnered attention both within and outside the art world due to its location in a regional city, raising the question of whether an art fair held outside of Seoul could succeed. In this context, the successful hosting of Art Daegu 2007 carries significant implications.

In the first half of 2007, the art market experienced a boom, only to be followed by a series of scandals, including the Shin Jeong-ah controversy and the Lee Jung-seop forgery scandal, which dampened the market’s momentum. Concerns of a bubble in the art market led to widespread speculation that the market was entering a period of adjustment. Under these circumstances, participating galleries undoubtedly felt significant pressure, especially given the unprecedented scale of the art fair in a regional city. It was, in many ways, an unpredictable venture.

Nevertheless, these concerns proved to be unfounded. Kang Hyo-joo, director of Phillip Kang Gallery and an advisory committee member for Art Daegu 2007, commented, “Honestly, I did not expect such positive results. I was particularly surprised by the enthusiasm and passion shown by the people of Daegu toward art. I believe this will have a positive impact on the Korea Galleries Art Fair in Busan this coming March.” She added, “I’ve participated in numerous art fairs, but despite being a first-time event, Art Daegu 2007 was well-organized. The gallery booths were spacious, and the pathways were wide, making for a comfortable viewing experience. In a word, it was a sophisticated art fair.”

On the last day of the event, from 2 to 3 PM, Professor Choi Byung-Sik from Kyung Hee University delivered a lecture at the EXCO conference room. The lecture, titled "The Trends of the Korean Art Market in the Second Half of 2007," analyzed the overall trends in the market, including price fluctuations and transaction rankings, using concrete data. It also provided insights into the outlook for 2008.

Given the success of Art Daegu 2007, it appears that the Korean art market’s growth will continue for some time.
