Kim Daljin's "Artists I've Met"
Lee Hee-Soo, the Leader Behind the Success of Art Daegu 2007
Daegu has long been a city that has produced notable modern artists such as Seo Dong-Jin, Lee In-Sung, Son Il-Bong, Ju Kyung, and Jung Jeom-Sik. More recently, the city has been home to a rising group of popular artists in the art market, including Lee Jung-Woong, Do Sung-Wook, Yoon Byung-Rak, Lee Soo-Dong, Noh Tae-Woong, and Lee Woo-Rim. With a wealth of artists and numerous art schools, Daegu has immense potential as a city of art. Additionally, Daegu has a tradition in photography and the textile industry, having hosted events such as the Daegu Photo Biennale in 2006 and the Daegu Textile Art Documenta in 2003 and 2007. Art Daegu was established to promote Daegu as a cultural city and to serve as an external platform for Daegu's art scene.
Art Daegu 2007 was organized by LEEART, an art fair planning company, in partnership with Monthly Art and EXCO. The event took place from December 12 to 16, 2007.
EXCO, Daegu's exhibition and convention center, rebranded its name in August of the previous year. LEEART was founded by Lee Hee-Soo (58 years old), who has operated Gongsan Gallery since 1998, to manage art fairs in a systematic manner. Unlike the operation of galleries as the primary market, the need for a professional and structured company is becoming more prominent. Lee, a graduate of Yeungnam University's painting department and its graduate school of education, has experience as an instructor at academies and universities, a professor at Yeungjin College, and a 16-year career at Samsung Group, followed by 10 years of gallery management. His strategy has been to support artists by discovering them, exhibiting their work in Daegu, organizing solo exhibitions in Seoul, and then advancing them into art fairs. When I first met him a few years ago, he was introducing a solo exhibition of a Daegu artist at the Kumho Museum of Art in Seoul, personally guiding visitors through the gallery.
Although Daegu hosted Daegu Art Expo twice in 2002 and 2003, it did not continue. Lee said, "The time when galleries sold only a few artists' works has passed. It was urgent to create a market, open up new avenues, and revitalize the stagnant art scene in Daegu." To prepare for the event, Lee created an educational program called "Art Collection and Investment" to encourage participation, offered booth discounts to galleries showing exclusive artists, and collaborated with Monthly Art to offset the event's relatively low recognition. The fair, featuring 50 galleries from Korea and abroad, took place on the third floor of EXCO and was composed of small-scale special exhibitions. Though smaller than art fairs held in Seoul, it was a major success, achieving 3.2 billion KRW in sales, making it the second-highest-grossing art fair of the year. In comparison, the art fairs of 2007 reported sales as follows: Seoul International Art Fair (KIAF) in May with 17.5 billion KRW, Gallerist Art Fair in September with 2.8 billion KRW, Korea Contemporary Art Festival in March with 1 billion KRW, MANIF-Korean Figurative Art Grand Prize & Art Seoul Exhibition in April with 1 billion KRW, MANIF-Seoul International Art Fair in October with 900 million KRW, and Seoul Open Art Fair in December with 1.5 billion KRW. (Data from Maeil Business Newspaper, Dec. 18, 2007).
Encouraged by the success that exceeded expectations, Lee is now preparing for the second edition of Art Daegu in June.
