한국 아트페어의 새 역사가 대구에서 시작된다
"이제 아트페어는 작품뿐 아니라 작가를 쇼핑하는 장터가 되어야 합니다. 1차시장의 기능을 넘어서야 한다는 얘기죠. 그러기 위해선 전문적이고 체계적인 시스템을 갖춘 아트페어의 운영이 필요합니다. <아트 대구 2007>은 국내 최초로 전문업체에서 기획한 아트페어가 될 것입니다. 12월 12일부터 16일까지 5일 동안 대구 엑스코에서 열리는 <아트 대구 2007>의 운영위원장을 맡은 리아트 이회수 대표.
그는 첫 질문이 떨어지자, 초기 준비단계부터 현재 진행상황과 앞으로의 계획까지 <아트 대구 2007>에 대한 모든 것을 쉼 없이 쏟아냈다. 얘기를 들으면서 은연중에 사무국 벽면을 가득 메운 스케줄 보드로 눈길이 갔다. <아트 대구 2007>을 위해 지난 일년여 동안 동분서주한 그의 열정이 짐작되고도 남았다.
"어느덧 미술판에서 40년을 지냈습니다. 미술대학과 대학원을 졸업하고, 학원강사와 시간강사를 거쳐 교수 생활, 그리고 대기업에서 16년을 근무하고 화랑운영 10년까지. 그야말로 미술계에서 산전수전을 다 겪었죠. 이제는 그 경험과 노하우를 토대로 새로운 도전을 시작합니다. 아트페어 전문 기획사업을 통해서 말이죠."
1998년부터 대구 팔공산 자락에서 공산갤러리를 운영해 온 이회수 대표는 지난해 10월 대구화랑협회 회장직을 사임했다. 그리고 올해 5월 아트페어 전문 기획사를 설립했다. KIAF를 비롯한 국내 거의 모든 아트페어가 개인 화랑이나 협회 중심으로 운영되는데 따른 문제와 한계를 감지하고, 새로운 모델과 시스템을 만들기 위해서다. 이번 <아트 대구 2007>이 사업의 첫 성과가 될 것이다. 화량주 역시 나름대로 전문가임에는 틀림없지만, 아트페어는 1차시장인 화랑 운영과는 다르다는 게 이 대표의 생각이다. 그는 전문적이고 독자적인 운영위원회와 조직을 갖춘 <아트 바젤>을 예로 들면서, 한국에서도 객관적이고 체계적인 시스템을 갖춘 아트페어의 필요성을 역설했다. 그리고 지금이야말로 가장 적절한 시기라고 덧붙였다.
리아트와 (주)월간미술, (주)EXCO가 공동 주최하는 <아트 대구 2007>은 국내외 50개 화랑이 참가해 300여 명 작가의 작품 2000여 점을 선보인다. 특히 서울이 아닌, 한국 근현대미술의 태동지라고 할 수 있는 대구에서 열린다는 점에서 그 의미가 각별하다. 내년 아트페어는 같은 장소에서 6월 25일부터 29일 열릴 예정이다. <아트 대구 2007>이 좌초하지 않고 바젤 못지않은 대표 아트페어로 성장하길 기대한다.
A New Chapter in the History of Korean Art Fairs Begins in Daegu
"An art fair should not just be a marketplace for art but also a space to discover and 'shop' for artists. It must go beyond the functions of the primary market. To achieve this, we need a professionally managed and systematic approach to running an art fair. Art Daegu 2007 will be the first art fair in Korea planned by a professional company," says Heesoo Lee, CEO of LEEART and the chairperson of Art Daegu 2007, which will be held at EXCO in Daegu from December 12 to 16.
When asked the first question, he delved into every detail of Art Daegu 2007, from the initial preparation stage to the current progress and future plans. While listening to him, my eyes were drawn to the schedule board filling the office walls, giving a glimpse into the passion he’s poured into this project for over a year.
"I’ve been in the art world for 40 years now. After graduating from art school and completing my graduate studies, I worked as an instructor, professor, and later spent 16 years at a major corporation, followed by 10 years running a gallery. I’ve truly experienced every aspect of the art industry. Now, I’m embarking on a new challenge based on that experience and know-how, launching a specialized business to plan art fairs."
Since 1998, Heesoo Lee has run Gongsan Gallery at the foot of Palgongsan Mountain in Daegu. In October of last year, he stepped down as chairman of the Daegu Gallery Association, and in May of this year, he established a company specializing in art fair planning. This move was driven by the realization of the problems and limitations of existing art fairs in Korea, which are mostly run by individual galleries or associations like KIAF. His goal was to create a new model and system, and Art Daegu 2007 will be the first outcome of this venture.
Although gallery owners are undoubtedly experts in their field, Lee believes that running an art fair is a different challenge from managing a gallery, which primarily operates within the primary market. Citing Art Basel as an example, with its independent and professional organizational committee, he emphasized the need for a similarly objective and systematic approach to art fairs in Korea. He also noted that now is the most opportune time to do so.
Art Daegu 2007, jointly hosted by LEEART, Monthly Art Magazine, and EXCO, will feature works from 50 galleries, with over 2,000 pieces by 300 artists on display. The fact that it’s being held in Daegu, the birthplace of modern and contemporary Korean art, rather than in Seoul, adds a special significance to the event. Next year’s art fair is already scheduled to take place from June 25 to 29 at the same venue. There’s great hope that Art Daegu 2007 will not only succeed but also grow into a flagship art fair, comparable to Art Basel.
